Korp! Amicitia supports VEMU!

And celebrates 60 years since its inauguration in Toronto in 1952

Korp! Amicitia used the occassion of its 88th anniversary and the Toronto Chapter's 60th anniversary celebrations to hand over the results of a fund-raising drive in support of VEMU – the Museum of Estonians Abroad being built by Tartu College.

Eighteen members from korp! Amicitia's Tartu and Tallinn chapters joined in the week-long diamond jubilee festivities which culminated in a three-day celebration at Tartu College: on November 22nd a wine-tasting evening under the benevolent sponsorship of Akadeemiline Kodu for members of all of the academic organizations; on Novembr 23rd the women-only ritualistic swearing of allegiance to friendship and sisterhood ceremony with over 100 participants; and on November 24th a genuine jubilee party with the women decked out in elegant “fascinators” much like at a certain queen's diamond jubilee celebrations earlier in 2012. Non-stop dancing to a live band until the early hours of the morning resulted in exhausted feet but a lifted spirit!

Amicitia's double anniversay celebrations wound up on Sunday November 25th with a brunch at a colourful local Cabbagetown restautrant and attendance at the memorial service at St Andrew's Lutheran Church, where korp! Amicitia commemorated all of the Toronto chapter members who have passed from this world during the past 60 years.

Assisting pastor Kalle Kadakas at the Sunday service was Triin Käpp, assistant pastor of Tartu Jaani Church and a member of the Tartu chapter of korp! Amicitia and pastor Mart Salumäe from Toronto's St Peter's Lutheran Church. The musical interlude at the service was provided by a 19-member Amicitia choir conducted by amica Ingrid Silm and by a quartet with pastor Triin Käpp, pastor Mart Salumäe, conductor Ingrid Silm and well-known baritone around town Mati Matsoo.

By the time the plane left on Sunday November 26th with the visiting amicad from Tartu and Tallinn, Amicitia's double anniversary celebrations were declared a resounding success!
