PHOTOS – Pan Am Field Hockey GOLD MEDAL

On Saturday July 25, the last evening of competition, the University of Toronto Pan Am Field hosted the gold medal game in men's field hockey. A full house of mainly Canadian flag wavers tried valiantly to inspire the Canadian men, but the stingy defense and powerful offense of Argentina resulted in a 3-0 victory for the top-ranked team in the tournament. Photos 27-30 show the game-winning goal, which started from a short corner, a type of penalty shot in which up to five defenders can don masks to help the goalkeeper, while all other members of the defending team must be over the centre line. It was a special moment to capture, as goals in field hockey are not easy to see photographically.

On a personal note, having been born in Buenos Aires, Argentine law still considers me to be a citizen. My Canadian and Estonian citizenships provided some journalistic counterbalance, but when soccer, beach volleyball and field hockey are involved, the land of my birth brings me special pride.

For those interested in the photographic aspects, the twilight hour and the threat of rain made me choose to use my F2.8 70-200mm lens, foregoing the F5.6 200-400mm lens that I used during daylight games. Shutter speed was maintained at 1/1000 second and was mostly effective at capturing action. I put the ISO on the “auto” setting and with the eventual assistance of the stadium lights, the lighting was not too bad. The photography positions for field hockey were all in the corners, which fortunately had a good amount of play immediately in front. In addition, the referee seemed to spend more time on the other side. As the Canadian photographers were obliged to sit at the end where the Canadian team was attacking, hoping for the goal that never came, I was given plenty of room in the photographer positions on the opposite end, where all 3 Argentine goals were scored. The final two photos illustrate the support of family, both in defeat and in victory. It is a reminder that along with the uniformed colleagues standing as a team on the podium, there is always the more important team behind the scenes that is family.
