PHOTOS – Pan Am Track & Field

Friday July 24 was the third day of competition at York University in track and field. The morning session included heats of men's hurdles, women's heptathlon hurdles and high jump, men's triple jump and the semi-finals of both men's and women's 4x400m relays. The patriotic Canadian audience attention was on two top female athletes, Jessica Zelinka and Jillian Drouin, who were competing in the gruelling two-day heptathlon. The photos are displayed in the sequence in which they were shot, emphasizing that during track and field competition, several events are occurring at the same time. This posed a challenge for photography, as one had to decide who and what to concentrate on. In addition, photos were often ruined because athletes and officials from other events simply inadvertently got in the way.

For those interested in the photographic aspects, despite the sunny day, a shutter speed of 1/2000 seconds was required to capture the action. Race heats are a photographer's friend, as the quick succession of the same event allows for one to correct any errors in camera settings in time for the next heat. It was interesting to explore different vantage points, to look for angles which had the least risk of distraction. Many of the later photos were taken from a single seated position which gave views of the finish line, the relay exchanges for the 400m races and the high jump area.
