Press Release – EKN Election Results

37 candidates have been chosen by Canadian Estonians as their new representatives in the Estonian
Central Council (EKN). The Election Committee operates according to the EKN constitution otherwise known as the põhikiri. Based on paragraph 3a) of the constitution: the following formula determines the number of elected members: as the number of candidates less 5, with a minimum of 25 and to a maximum of 40. As there were 42 candidates, 37 have become members, as named on the list that follows. The election results will be ratified by the council at its meeting at the end of January, where they will also vote for a new President and Executive Team.

Many thanks to those who helped at the polling stations and counting ballots: Maarika Leppik, Liis Jakobson, Annike Tork, Anne Tork, Margus Aruja, Inga Eichenbaum, Tiiu Agur, Erika Kessa, Heli Vanaselja, Katrin Tamm, Silvi Raud, Anneli Tamm, Hendrik Tork, Talvi Parming and Kristi Doughty.

853 voters participated which is much more than in the last election and represents a 21.1% voter participation rate. 5 ballots were spoiled as the voters chose more than 25 candidates, 13 people tried to vote without a registration form and 2 tried to vote twice, which is a total of 20 ballots (2.34%), 25% of voters voted at polling stations and 33.5% voted in an EKN election for the first time. Each voter could vote for up to 25 candidates and on average they voted for 15 candidates. There will be more statistics available following EKN meeting at the end of the month.
