The Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra, Falun Gong, performs at the Roy Thompson Hall

The Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is significant because it is a fund raiser for the Falun Gong organization which was thrown out of Communist China after only six years of existence in the nineties. It became too popular for the ruling Communist party and threatened their hold on the people. Since then the Communist Chinese has incarcerated over one hundred members of the Falun Gong and have used them to harvest body parts that they sell to foreign recipients of transplants.

The Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is world class, gently introducing the audience to Chinese musical culture but still performing western favorites. Of special mention was a violin solo by Fiona Zheng. “She is or secret weapon,” said organizer Jennifer Wang considering that the Falun Gong is totally nonviolent.

The cultural mix was interesting, the conductor is a Russian trained Bulgarian, Milen Nachev, the concert master (lead violinist) is German Astrid Martig, the rest was Chinese including much of the compostitions.

Leaving their political leaning aside, a good afternoon of excellent music. They are coming back maybe in May.
