The Republic of Estonia was proclaimed on 24 February 1918. The following day Tallinn, the capital city of the newly-born nation, was occupied by the troops of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. This military occupation lasted for nine months, until revolution broke out in Germany.

Mr Browder was the largest foreign investor in Russia until November 2005, when he was suddenly denied entry to the country and declared "a threat to national security" by the Russian government for exposing corruption at large Russian companies.

New parliamentary interest group focussing on the Baltics and Nordic countriesRecently members of the Canadian Parliament announced the formation of a new special interest group – the Canada Nordic-Baltic Parliamentary Friendship Group. Initiated by members of the House of Commons and Senators, such groups are created by parliamentarians who have a special interest in the designated foreign countries – in this instanced the Baltic states and Nordic countries.

Teisipäeval kohtusid Kesknõukogu Kanadas (EKN) esimees Markus Hess ja juhatuse liige Paul Läänemets IRL-i esimehe Urmas Reinsaluga. (EKN on umbes 20 000 liikmelise eesti rahvusrühma esindusorgan Kanadas).

Hess ja Reinsalu arutasid Kanada eesti kogukonna olukorda ning analüüsiti võimalusi kodu-Eesti ja Kanadas elavate eestlaste kultuurisidemete tugevdamiseks. Ühiselt leiti, et vajalik on Eestist hiljuti Kanadasse asunud inimeste suurem kaasahaaramine tugevasse ja hästi välja kujunenud Kanada eesti kogukonda.

Urmas Reinsalu andis ülevaate IRL-i poliitikast välismaal elavate eestlaste suhtes ja rõhutas IRL-i seisukohta, et vajalik on senisest suurem toetus kodust kaugel elavatele eestlastele. „Väliseesti kogukondade kaasamine Eesti poliitika kujundamisse on IRL-i poliitika osa".

Reinsalu hinnangul peab eestlastel olema võimalus eestlaseks jääda ja oma lapsed eestlastena üles kasvatada sõltumata elukohamaast. „See peab olema Eesti Vabariigi kaasmaalaste poliitika nurgakivi," ütles Reinsalu.

Markus Hess tutvustas EKN-i seisukohta ESTO-de traditsiooni jätkamise vajalikkusest. IRL toetab ESTO-de edasikestmist kui olulist rahvuspoliitilist traditsiooni ja välismaal elujõulist eestlaskonda organiseerivat jõudu.

Consul General (EHCC) Mr Laas Leivat and the new President of the Estonian Central Council (ECC) Mr. Marcus Hess. The past president of the ECC, Mr. Avo Kittask, did a stellar job as master of ceremonies.

A main feature of the event is always the bestowing of the the Canadian-Estonian Medal of merit to those deserving. The contribution of Erik Hess, Toomas Kütti and Jüri Daniel were thus recognized.

The main guest of honour was Conservative, Federal House Leader Peter Van Loan and his wife Sheryl who spoke and extended his personal greetings from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Russian language as the language of occupation?

Russian flagThe recent referendum in Latvia on the question of making Russian the second official language of the country was opposed by 75% of the voters. This means that a part of the non-Latvian language population also voted against the referendum proposal.

The reasons possible for this are intriguing in themselves. Yegeni Kristfovits, the leader of the youth group, Open Republic in Estonia, claims that the 'no' vote from ethnic Russians in Latvia came from of those that don't want their mother tongue to be known as "the language of occupation", especially in the year 2012. The Baltic countries have enjoyed 20 years of independence and an official "language of occupation" would hinder possible process of reconciliation. It would be a stark reminder of the the "Russification" program targeting non-Slavic countries such as the Baltic states. Kristafovits identifies those Russians who support Latvian as the only state language as Russian intellectuals who also agreed with (and some welcomed) Latvia's right to independence.
