I'm currently packing my bags to work on my third Caribbean cruise contract as a seasonal youth counsellor. This is after ringing in the New Year while cruising around the South Pacific Islands and New Zealand. I shared a little about my experiences working on cruise ships in my last post. Now I'm going to share more about my latest trip along with some photos.

Discovering Photogenic Toronto - Ricoh Coliseum

The Ricoh Coliseum - photo by Peeter PõldreThe Ricoh Coliseum, located on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition, first opened in 1921. It was initially known as the Civic Arena and then became the CNE Coliseum. Since 1922, it has hosted equestrian events at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In 2003, the Ricoh corporation secured naming rights to the building. The American Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs farm team, the Toronto Marlies, relocated to Toronto (from St. John's, Newfoundland) and began to play hockey at the Ricoh in the fall of 2005.

Külastades Kanada rahvusvahelist autonäitust Torontos oli selge, et Põhja-Ameerika autofirmad on võtnud eeskuju Euroopa autotootjatelt, kasutades uutes automudelites rohkem diislitehnoloogiat. Hübriid- ja elektritehnoloogiat on hiljuti propageeritud autotootjatelt kui kõige energiasäästlikumat, aga diiselmootoritega autod on järjest kogunud populaarsust, sest need pakuvad peaaegu sama säästlikkust kui uuem tehnoloogia.

Buddhism In China - Photo by Peeter PoldreChina's most well-known religion is Buddhism. Various estimates suggest that 20% of the Chinese population practice some variant of Buddhism. Temples can be found in all cities. In the city of Hangzhou, the Lingyin temple is famous for its rock carvings of various Buddhas. Even at the beginning of the Chinese winter (November) the temples are full of Chinese tourists and local worshipers. Ceremonies include the burning of incense with prayers directed to various statues or in all four directions of the compass. When Buddha statues are in buildings, photography is forbidden, but photos can be taken from the outside. Incense is sold at the temple, with the average bundle costing around two Canadian dollars.

Tommy Thompson Park - Photo by Peeter PõldreTommy Thompson Park is famous among Toronto bird-watchers and nature lovers for the wide variety of species that can be found on this reclaimed land, located at the foot of Leslie Street, by Lake Ontario.

The park is commonly known as the Leslie Street spit. Although the peak season for nature is in the spring, with the park being on the migration route for over 200 species of birds, the winter also offers opportunities to see birds which remain in Toronto or migrate from the Arctic, such as the Long-tailed Ducks captured while diving. The photo gallery also captures the survival instincts of a gall, giving chase to a falcon!

Thorns in winter - Photo by Peeter PõldreLocated on the shores of Lake Ontario, at Kipling Avenue south of Lakeshore Boulevard, Colonel Samuel Smith Park is the west-end counterpart to Tommy Thompson Park.

In addition to lovely scenes of the Toronto skyline, the park is traversed with numerous fine-gravel trails that are ideal for strolling or jogging. Dog-walking is permitted. The trails provide easy access to numerous types of vegetation, including a variety of trees and shrubs. With the shoreline and marshlands, the park has become known as a premier bird-watching site within Toronto. Over 100 bird species have been recorded as nesting in the park.

Volunteering or working abroad can be exhilarating and rewarding, fostering memories that will last a lifetime. As I mentioned in my previous post, prior to working with children on cruise ships, I was an au pair (nanny) in Ireland. My best friend Katie and I were planning on fulfilling our dreams of backpacking through Europe after graduating university. Using aupair-world.net, Katie had been a nanny for two little girls in Cork, Ireland the summer after her first year of university. Long story short, we ended up taking care of the girls, then three and six years of age, for a month before our backpacking adventure. Needless to say, we didn't get paid very much splitting an au pair salary but we made enough to cover some of our weekend bus trips around Ireland. During the week, we enjoyed dancing to Disney Channel soundtracks, jumping on the trampoline, role-playing with dolls, helping with homework, cooking and baking with the girls, braiding their hair, singing songs and so much more.

Next month, I'll be embarking on my seventh cruise, the fourth of which I'll be working with the children and youth onboard. When asked to write a blog about my experience working and travelling, I decided the perfect place to start is talking to the person who inspired my love of travelling.

Taoismile pani Hiinas, Maoshani mägedes aluse juba rohkem kui 500 aastat enne Kristust Laozi. Mõnisada aastat hiljem asutati sellesse kohta mungaklooster, mis tegutseb seal tänini. Hooned on erinevatel aegadel kannatada saanud, eriti suurt kahju tekitsa teine maailmasõda, kuid klooster on alati taastatud ja elujõuline. Kloostris paikneb ka Laozi pronksist kuju, mis on üks kõrgemaid maailmas.Taoism kõige tuntum sümbol on yin yang, ehk vari ja valgus. Kõige populaarsem seletus sellele on vastandite seondumine või ühinemine.
