Eesti keele kursus Toronto Ülikoolis

Once again, the University of Toronto has a bustling classroom of eager students learning elementary Estonian.

The class is comprised of two groups of students: University of Toronto undergraduate students (7 of them !) who are taking the course for a university credit and the auditors, who are there to further enrich their Estonian vocabulary and knowledge of the structure.

With each class, the students are debunking the popular myth that 14 declinations are exceptionally difficult to master. For the linguists in the class, who speak multiple languages, the comparative aspect of linguistic structure and usage prove to be the most intriguing.

In addition to learning useful phrases and vocabulary, learning poems, songs and proverbs and of course, the 14 declinations, the class has enjoyed home-made Estonian bread (“must leib”) as their recess snack and has gotten a glimpse of the world-famous Estonian Song Festival (“Laulupidu”).

As this is a one- semester course, some of the students are continuing in January in EST 101H1, which will start Jan.11 and is also be taught Mondays and Thursday 7-9. The course is open to full-time U of T students and auditors. To enrol in the 2016 Winter term Elementary Estonian course, one should have some preliminary knowledge of it, either through formal course work ( EST 100 F) or via other environments and formats. To get permission to enrol, please contact Marju Toomsalu at mtoomsal@ryerson.ca. To inquire about auditing, please visit the following link from here!

We would like to thank Tartu College and the Chair of Estonian Studies Foundation, without whose financial support the Estonian language course would not be possible.
