Silvi Laan Otsmaa – Ball Organizer, LEP–ESTO, San Francisco

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and moved to San Francisco 26 years ago when I married Mati Otsmaa. We have 2 children, Mikk, 19 and Kai, 14. Before kids, I was an accountant for a container leasing company in San Francisco. I have been a stay at home mom since Mikk was born.

Growing up, my family was very active in the Estonian community. I attended Estonian school, was involved in Estonian Girl Scouts and folkdance and helped prepare food in the Eesti Maja kitchen at most of the parties. I have attended just about every West Coast Estonian Days and ESTO since the late 60's. During most of them I performed folk dancing with our troop “Kivikasukas”. Waking up early and spending many grueling hours at rehearsals, performing in the rain or baking hot sun was not always enjoyable, but the gratifying feeling I got after each performance made it all worthwhile. I have made so many lifelong friends at LEP and ESTO events.

I know how much hard work, time and dedication it takes to run LEP. I have helped in the background at many of them, Los Angeles, 1971, my father Bruno Laan was the president; 1993, San Francisco, my husband Mati was president; and 2001 San Francisco with good friend Valdek Parik as president. At this LEP I wanted to take on a bigger role and organize an event. The Ball has always been one of my favorite events. It is an elegant event, people get dressed up, all are in a good mood and you get to dance all night! I also enjoy party planning, and what better challenge than to plan a party (Blue, Black and White themed) for over 300?

Not to have been involved in the Estonian community would have deprived me of my culture and the sacrifices my parents and grandparents made for me. It is important for me to include my children and get them involved with their Estonian heritage. Mati and I have always brought them to LEPs and ESTOs not only for their cultural enrichment but to make lifelong friendships as we have. They have also performed at many of the events and look forward to participating at this LEP.

There are many places and sites to visit in San Francisco. There are also many world class restaurants and fantastic shopping areas in Union Square for one to explore. There are many fun night spots and clubs south of Market. North Beach is a historic Italian neighborhood filled with cozy little restaurants and beautiful views of the city. Our world famous China town is steps away from our host hotel where you can enjoy an authentic Asian shopping and dining experience. There is something for everyone in San Francisco which makes it one of the world's most popular cities.
